How trauma can affect daily life, how assessment helps, and what trauma-focused treatment involves.
All patient resourcesExperiences can leave different patterns.
After an overwhelming event, some people experience unwanted memories, disrupted sleep, feeling on guard, or avoiding reminders. Responses differ, and a trauma history alone establishes neither a diagnosis nor a single treatment pathway.
Assessment looks at timing, severity, daily functioning, safety, and other possible explanations. It also considers strengths, support, and what you want help changing.
Preparation has a purpose.
Before focused trauma work, we discuss the approach, your questions, readiness, and how to respond if distress rises. You can speak about pace, ask for clarification, and request a pause.
Treatment selection considers current stability, co-occurring concerns, and the level of support you need.
What EMDR involves.
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing is a structured trauma-focused psychotherapy. After assessment and preparation, treatment may involve recalling a distressing memory while following guided eye movements or another form of alternating stimulation. The clinician monitors your response throughout the work.
EMDR is one evidence-supported option for PTSD. Other approaches may also be appropriate. The choice follows an individualized assessment and a discussion of options.
